How to Store Fresh Mint Leaves for Maximum Freshness

Fresh mint can wilt and lose aroma quickly if left at room temperature or in a dry environment. To maintain bright, fragrant leaves for cocktails and cooking, attention to storage technique makes a significant difference. Here are two reliable methods to keep mint at its best for days—or even a week or more.

Storing Mint in Water Like Fresh Flowers

Preserving mint stems upright in water is one of the most effective ways to keep the leaves vibrant and hydrated. This approach prevents wilting and helps retain essential oils that give mint its cooling aroma.

  • Trim the bottom of the mint stems with sharp scissors or a knife.
  • Place the stems in a glass with 30–60 ml water—enough to cover stem ends but not the leaves.
  • Loosely cover the leaves and glass with a plastic bag to maintain humidity while allowing some airflow.
  • Set the glass in the refrigerator. Change the water every two days to prevent stagnation.

Wrapping Mint in a Damp Paper Towel

If space is at a premium, this method protects leaves from dehydration and minimizes bruising. It works especially well for pre-picked mint sprigs or partial bunches.

  • Dampen a paper towel with water—just enough to be moist, not soaking.
  • Wrap the mint sprigs loosely in the towel to cushion and hydrate them.
  • Place the wrapped mint inside a plastic bag, leaving the bag slightly open for airflow.
  • Store the bag in your refrigerator's crisper drawer for optimal humidity.

Extra Tips for Keeping Mint Leaves Fresh

  • Always remove any wilted or blackened leaves before storage—damaged leaves hasten spoilage for the rest.
  • Keep mint cold but avoid freezing temperatures, which quickly turn leaves black.
  • Avoid washing mint until just before use to prevent excess moisture and early decay.
  • For longer-term storage, consider chopping and freezing mint with water in ice cube trays.
